Eternal Word

John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word ...”

What comes to mind first when you hear the word ‘WORD’? For me, it usually brings to mind black markings on a white page; it is linear, two dimensional. If you remember back to the first iterations of the computer, like the 086, then it was green letters on a black screen. The gospel of John introduces us to THE WORD. That preposition THE ensures that you are aware that this is a very specific and unique WORD. The rest of the verse gives us the answer to what THE WORD is, or rather who. “In the beginning was THE WORD, and THE WORD was with God, and THE WORD was God.”

Three things are told to us about THE WORD: (1) First, it is eternal. I refer to THE WORD as it for now, as it is most familiar to us as communication. John, the apostle, tells us that it has always existed; it was there before time began, before God started creating the world. (2) Secondly, it is a part of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit). Throughout Scripture, we see that God communicates with people in many different ways, and yet it really is all through His WORD. Genesis 1 and John 1 tell us that God created the world by THE WORD ... He spoke it all into being. So, which part of the Trinity is THE WORD? John 1:2-5 hint at it, and I will talk about it next week, that THE WORD is God the Son, known to us as Jesus Christ. (3) Third, it is God. This is the most difficult to understand. When God speaks, He speaks truth because He is true; this is His character. Therefore, that which He speaks is not only His WORD, but is a part of Him, revealing Himself to mankind.

So, why is this important, and what does this have to do with you or me? The biggest lesson I think that we can learn from this is that THE WORD is the most important thing to listen to. Whether is reading the Bible, or reading a book about the Bible, or listening to a sermon, or any other variation, take note! What God is trying to tell you is important, in fact it should be priority one!! This is vital information for living right, and for getting to know God, which is our primary purpose. Do you want to truly live? You need THE WORD. Do you want purpose and meaning in life? You need THE WORD. Do you want to get to know God so you can follow Him as you should? You need THE WORD.

Let us get to know THE WORD, which has been revealed to us.

In the upcoming blog posts, I will be going through the gospel of John, using selected verses, to help get to know THE WORD. Next up Illuminating Word.
